so, i had someone call me from an unknown number sat night close to midnight. i let it go to voicemail not knowing who it was. upon checking my messages it turns out that it was the same crazy person who came by my house and slapped a beck (whose new album i've been enjoying this past week) backstage pass onto my glass front door...

the enactment of the other kingdom is about others seeing difference in our lives and the communities we form. not that we don't drink, swear, dance or play cards... or whatever the updated list of cultural taboos are, but that we show forth networks of living that privilege justice for the oppressed, integrity in relationships, love for perceived enemies, hope amidst our anxieties, dance in a world transfixed on the dirge, enactment carries the values of francis when he said, preach the gospel at all times. if necessary use words. it is about who we are not the ends we bring into being for out of who we are the future is made the kingdom is you you are the kingdom

so i saw this movie the other day, my big fat greek wedding.... a cool cinematic story about the intricate politics and economics of "non-traditional" (whatever the hell that means) american families. it was good. i would even take my mom to see it.

The good and the ugly: A simplistic hunt for evil in a complex world
Doomed by the incoherence of a foreign policy defined largely by biblical notions of the struggle between good and evil, the Bush administration thrashes about in its hunt for the devil.

High-speed Internet access at Starbucks
Starbucks finally has their 802.11b network fully rolled out. The thing that still sucks is that the "unlimited minutes" plan continues to be metered after 500 Meg. Still, all in all, not a bad deal for $29.95 a month. Although, until it is a loss leader to sell coffee usage will not be very high given that most business travelers already have the choice of dialup or broadband in their hotel and local users can get WiFi DSL or cable at home for just a few more dollars a month. T-Mobile is supplying the pipe.

What Happens When The "Good Guys" Do Bad Things?
The Death Convoy of Afghanistan
“Death by container” has been a cheap means of mass murder used by both the Taliban and the Northern Alliance for at least five years. Abandoned freight containers—international standard size, 40 feet by 8 feet by 8 feet—litter the roads of Afghanistan, rusting reminders of the many tons of aid that have poured into the country over the past 20 years.... When the containers were opened, it was found the inmates had been grilled black.

next-wave.org - the editor says "hi"
Lately, I've been in the mood to set fire to something. I just don't know what needs to go up in flames. Maybe it's my obsession with movies, but I feel an overwhelming need to find an enemy, an antagonist, a villian. Unfortunately, everyone is too darn polite...

Yahoo! News - Low-Carb Diets Tax Kidneys, May Weaken Bones
Since I am such an advocate of Low Carb High Protein diets (I lost 60 lbs in part to my LCHP regime a couple years back) I thought that I should post this link and comment for a moment.
I still believe that many obese people should consider a short term LCHP diet with massive amounts of water and moderate consistent exercise to get the upfront motivation to keep going. So much of attaining weight loss and healthy habits is simply motivation. When you walk a LCHP path for a while you can lose that 10-50 lbs quickly and then have the motivation to lose your final 10-20 lbs as slowly as possible on a sustainable, healthy, well-rounded consumption regime and a consistent habit of physical exertion.
Eat your carbs--just don't be a gluttonous fool! How simple.

Rumors: Segway isn’t really Ginger
Metcalfe told the New York Times earlier this year: “Some months ago when speculation was running high, I said that Kamen’s IT was more important than the Internet, but not as important as cold fusion, had cold fusion worked out. The IT I was talking about, which I did not disclose, was NOT Segway. That’s all I can say.”

Opposition to Nanotechnology (req free reg)
The great Gray Goo debate is beginning to matter.
The controversy involves the potential perils of making molecular-size objects and devices, a field known as nanotechnology.
...The ultimate nightmare was the so-called Gray Goo catastrophe, in which self-replicating microscopic robots the size of bacteria fill the world and wipe out humanity.
...Now, though, nanotechnology is toddling into commercialization, with nanoscale particles being embedded in consumer products like sunscreens, stain-resistant khakis and wound dressings.
...For the first time, nanotechnology is encountering the kind of real-world headwinds that have impeded biotechnology.
The "precautionary principle" is one kernal of critique from within the scientific community in response to innovation such as nanotech. Read more on the principle here: Science and Environmental Health Network

~ Update on the Qur'an reading assignment at the University of North Carolina ~
Assigned Reading on Koran in Chapel Hill Raises Hackles (req free reg)
The Christian group that argued in the 4th Circuit Court that this assignment was "forced Islamic indoctrination" (a position which was ruled against by the judge today) is also pushing for Virginia's General Assembly to deny financing to the University unless it gives equal time to "all known religions."
Having the courts interfere with what universities can or cannot teach is simply asking the state to act as a propaganda/censorship board and should be avoided at all cost. This is a ridiculous argument that would not hold up if argued in the context of any other discipline and makes the plaintiffs and their supporters look rather obtuse in their understanding of liberty, the establishment clause and open academic inquiry.

from responsibility to sustainability
...the American Dream is no longer confined to these shores. Globalization and free trade, together with an unaccountable World Trade Organization, have internationalized the Dream. Through a handful of “entertainment” corporations that control the world’s media, the dominant cultural imagery of material excess ensures that 1.3 billion Chinese, 1.1 billion Indians, and another 3.6 billion in the rest of the developed and developing world are also wired into the American Dream. Put simply, our planet does not have the resources for 6 billion people living like Americans. Research shows that to sustain consumption and waste production at this level would require the resources of at least two more planets.
